Dr. Priya Sharma
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Molecular Biology→Soft RoboticsLeap 97
Impact summary
Developed a new class of hydrogel-actuated surgical tools now in Phase II clinical trials. Filed 4 patents. Named to MIT Technology Review's Innovators Under 35.
Background
Priya began her career decoding the mechanical properties of bacterial flagella. A fellowship year spent embedded with MIT's Distributed Robotics Laboratory changed everything — she saw that the same physical principles governing microscopic motors could be engineered at human scale. She now leads a lab building bio-inspired soft robots for minimally invasive surgery.
The leap story
“I remember the moment it clicked. I was watching a flagellum rotate under the microscope and thinking: this is a rotary motor that self-assembles, self-repairs, and operates in a fluid environment. Nobody had built anything close to it in robotics. I decided I had to.”
